The Assets & Chill Manifesto

We hold these truths to be self evident.

Consumerism is your enemy. There is no way to build assets and chill about your financial life if you're spending more than you earn. The culture of consumerism that demands that you spend more and more at every turn is your biggest financial enemy. We don't have to be consumers all the time.

Consumer debt is a trap. When consumerism makes us spend more than we earn, the only way to fill the gap is consumer debt (usually credit cards). This quickly becomes a trap and a downward spiral. Countless people have experienced this and know that you can't build assets and can't experience financial chill when you're caught in this trap.

Most financial products are designed to make the financial industry rich – not you. When you do start investing, you quickly learn how confusing it can be. That complexity is intentional on the part of Wall Street – more complexity means more fees and more profits for them. Those profits come at your expense as an investor.

Most financial content focuses on the wrong things. If you turn to financial media or content creators or authors to try to sort through the complexity of financial products, you will be presented with tips and tricks or in depth education on how personal finances works. Neither is particularly helpful because neither serves as a guide through the entire process broken down into projects you can tackle.

There are great financial products out there. Fortunately, there has been a revolution in financial products over the past few decades. It is now possible to buy very diversified investments with extremely low fees. Just a few decades ago this would have been impossible.

You can become financially secure and build wealth. You can escape consumerism and debt. You can build assets and a secure financial future. You can take on the projects that will build wealth and allow you to chill about your money.

The Assets & Chill Origin Story

Assets & Chill was born out of frustration with how difficult it is for people to get the resources they need to make good financial decisions for themselves and their families. The truth is that the the vast majority of financial decisions are straightforward. The problem is that the financial industry profits from unnecessary complexity and financial reporting and content creators need to churn out an endless stream of content.

The result is that there are few resources available to efficiently guide people through the financial decisions they need to make. Some people do the research to sort through all this content to make good financial decisions; many people succumb to the noise and hype in the financial ecosystem and make bad decisions; the majority of people don't take the time to make important financial decisions at all – arguably the worst outcome of all.

Assets & Chill was born to solve this problem. We approach personal finance slightly differently:

We treat personal finance as a series of projects.
For each individual project we provide only the information necessary to make a reasonable decision for that project.
An extreme bias towards taking action by completing projects.

Our mission is to help you tackle the personal finance projects in your life in order to tame the chaos of your personal finances. Our vision for you is a life with significant assets and a whole lot of chill.

The Assets & Chill Principles

Let's get stuff done.

We have a set of principles behind all of our projects. These principles ensure that each of our projects is as simple and impactful as possible. We don't want you doing personal finance projects just for the sake of doing projects – we want you to see real impacts from each of these projects.

High Leverage

Each project must be high leverage. That means that the ultimate benefits of the project must significantly outweigh the time and costs of undertaking the project. You're going to be getting a return on your investment.

Quick Wins

Each project has to deliver quick wins. It's true that the largest wins in personal finance take time (compound interest is slow but powerful!), but each project delivers immediate benefits like simpler finances, automated solutions, and peace of mind.

The 80/20 Principle

The 80/20 Principle (also known as the Pareto Principle) holds that 20% of our effort yields 80% of our results. The principle holds in personal finance. We focus on the handful of projects that have the largest impact.

Action Over Endless Learning

Our projects are not primarily about learning the ins and outs of person finance. There are countless other resources out there for that. Instead, our projects are focused on taking action and getting stuff done.

K.I.S.S.

Keep it simple, stupid. Humans have a tendency to overcomplicate things; nowhere is this more true than in personal finance. Each project is designed to keep things as simple as possible.
